Who Taught Us About this Filipino Wedding Habit?

// August 4th, 2007

Dude’s cousin, a youngster named Ryan, (labeled him youngster because he’s just 23), got married to an Ynez-Veneracion-look-a-like lady named Jen. They’re a cute couple I must say. The guy looking so innocent and lady looking a bit more learned. But that’s just me, of course.

Whenever I attend wedding ceremonies, I never fail to count the number of godmothers and godfathers. And this time, as I’ve expected, there were 10 pairs of ‘em. So, a total of 20 wedding godparents! But why?

No matter if you’re a popular person or just a simpleton, why has it become a common thing for Filipinos to get too many godparents? I think this is also true with baptismal ceremonies, right?

I wish that the reason is so that many would bless the couple or guide them during their married life. But the common notion is, especially for not-so-rich folks, to break even with their wedding party expenses!
