When GMA 7 started airing Meteor Garden this July, I got so giddy because I’ve always wanted to follow this Taiwanese drama series but couldn’t because of various factors (one’s not being a super-fan of ABS CBN).
As usual, the commercial ads contributed to my annoyance so I decided to just watch MG on YouTube. The 30-minute show, without commercial breaks, would be gloriously reduced to only 10-minute part of an episode. Also, I didn’t have to get irked by the Tagalog dubbing because the Meteor Garden YouTuble uploads were provided with English subtitles.
Needless to say, I spent about three days watching the whole of Meteor Garden 1 and the fun parts of Meteor Garden 2. And like many who have watched these shows, I fell in love with one of the characters - Qing He.
NOT!
Have you read the title and can you see the image? It’s Jerry Yan that got me head over heels. Now I feel like a teener again drooling over an Asian actor. I think it’s the combination of the badboy/fierce lover image that Jerry Yan portrayed as Dao Ming Si and his “I’m a man of size”, when he meant “I’m a man of sense”, which reminds of my very own Dude, that got me giggling my heart away while watching Meteor Garden I. I’m emphasizing Meteor Garden 1 because like many MG fans, I hate Meteor Garden 2 because of the appearance of Ye Sha, which complicated things too much between Shan Cai and Dao Ming Si.
How badly did Jerry Yan strike me? I’m thinking of advancing my Mandarin Chinese! I was only able to take some basic Mandarin a few years ago. So when I get the chance to visit Taiwan, I can converse with him. Haha!
Oh and some trivia: did you know that F4 is now re-named as JVKV because of some copyright issue? If you’re a fan, of course, you’ll tell me it’s old news.
For those who are wondering what is Jerry Yan up to these days, I’ve read he’s about to shoot “Basketball Fire” or the drama version of Slam Dunk and he’ll be Sakuragi Hanamichi. This one I’m not sure I’ll enjoy because I’m not into basketball but since it’s Jerry Yan… I think Dude and my bros will like it more since they’re big fans of Slam Dunk.
Oh and I’ve also read that because of the re-airing of Meteor Garden, ABS CBN will try to recapture Jerry Yan’s fans’ hearts through airing one of his soaps - The Hospital. I’ve seen some parts of it via YouTube but I’m still yearning for the happy-go-lucky brat Dao Ming Si. I just wis
h there’ll be a Meteor Garden 3.
Updates: For more pictures of Jerry Yan AsianFanatics update its Jerry Yan gallery as soon as there are new pics of Bao Long aka Yan Cheng Xu (Chinese names of Jerry Yan).
The image on the right is my favorite screenshot of Meteor Garden I when Jerry Yan was crying because he thought that Shan Cai (Barbie Hsu) was cheating on her with Huaze Lei (Vic Zhou or Zai Zai, who is now the real-life boyfriend of Barbie Hsu). Here’s a YouTube upload of this episode of Meteor Garden wherein Jerry Yan’s crying. Doesn’t Jerry Yan just look so adorable in that scene? Heart-breakingly adorable!
If you’d like to know more about Jerry Yan, especially what he’s up to this year, here are some great sources Jerry Yan’s schedule, whereabouts, ads, photoshoots and all.
StarJerry - official website of Jerry Yan’s fans club, you can only access it fully if you’re a member of Jerry Yan’s fans club, which would cost you $32. Sigh.
08/23/07 update: According to an AsianFanatics forum post, Jerry Yan may become a part of Qin Statue, an ancient drama wherein he might play as Meng Tian Fang - a Qin Dynasty general. It’ll be more lovely if Jerry Yan chooses this project over Basketball of Fire, which he was also rumored to do. Why? Isn’t this Pepsi commercial look of Jerry Yan (guy on the right) a lot more appealing than what Basketball of Fire will ever come up with for this beautiful man?

[…] Watching Meteor Garden, particularly Meteor Garden 2, got me depressed so much for a few days after coupling that habit with too many sleepless nights spent working (pretending to be workaholic again ). Sleep deprivation and watching Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan) lose his memory of Shan Cai is a fatal combination I must say. I even hinted to my brother, my youngest brother who can never be talked to about anything serious, that if I’m not Alfa, I think no anti-depressant will be able to abate suicidal thoughts. How stupid can I get, right? […]

I am experiencing the same thing right now, Sari Saring Thoughts.
MG is addicting and fatal when combined with sleep deprivation. Well, I become sleep deprived because of it (haha..) Well, that plus school work. MG 1 is WAY better than MG2.. I hate the situation, really. I don’t think I want to watch it again. I just want a good ending for Dao and Shan Cai… I think I’ll just watch the ending, though, if the temptation sinks in.
Dao Ming Si is an ideal guy. He’s strong, protective, and loyal and he doesn’t care what other people think.
I wonder if such guy is real.

MG2 achieved its goal of making its audience experience a roller-coaster of emotions. It’s depressing but still a very memorable series, don’t you think?
Re: Dao Ming Si as an ideal guy, I think such men still exist. However, they’re incredibly rare!

hi alfa! while reading your blog i couldn’t believe that there’s somebody out there who is going through the very same thing i’m experiencing right now.
i have watched the mg series in tv when it was shown in abs-cbn in 2003. even before, i liked jerry because of the character he portrayed in mg. but back then my fondness of him was not a big thing. and then just 2 months ago my sister brought home a dvd copy of mg 1 & 2. after watching the series again the effect is the same as yours. just like you i also felt like a teener drooling over this superstar (i’m 26 by the way).
i also had basic mandarin 1 & 2 as a subject in college but back then i didn’t really pay attention & effort in learning. but now i have this sudden interest in learning mandarin (i know a few phrases now and i’m eager to learn more).
now i always make it a point to be updated with the latest news about him. i have even watched his new series ‘the hospital’ on dvd. & i must say his acting really improved. even his singing is much better (he sang the opening song for ‘the hospital’).
by the way i feel relieved knowing that i’m not the only one who’s feeling gaga over him (hahaha!)

Hi Raine,
I can no longer how count how many times I’ve watched/re-watched Meteor Garden. I still watch it whenever I yearn for a dose of Jerry Yan cuteness.
It’s a fanatic syndrome to do anything that will somewhat make us feel closer to our fave actors or actresses. One’s doing anything to help us communicate with them - taking Mandarin. Hehe.
How do you get updated about Jerry Yan news? Through forums?
August 31st, 2007 at 8:00 am
i regularly visit Jerry Yan Philippines Blog. here’s the link:

by the way good luck in your mandarin lessons! my knowledge of mandarin goes as far as pinyin only. i’m not really familiar with the characters. i realized how hard it is to really learn mandarin. you can speak the language but writing the characters is another thing!

i’m so glad to have read your blog. i am in my 30’s and fell in love with jerry yan on meteor garden. like you, i wasn’t able to watch the series when it was first aired on abs-cbn. recently, i got interested in watching it since i sometimes get to watch it on my way home from work — sa mga G-liner bus! haha!
i do agree with you that MG1 is better than MG2. i hated the roller coaster of emotions that you mentioned when i watched MG2.
now i understand why people went gaga over him when MG was first shown a few years ago. what can i say, i’m now a fan of jerry yan. i appreciate the pictures and the links on this post. now i know where to go. will visit again some time. again, thanks!

@daomisyel
Thanks for keeping the Jerry Yan/F4 fever alive with the updates. Got news about the airing date of “The Hospital”?
@Devie
Dao ming si.. so many girls are going gaga over him. Don’t you wish there’s Meteor Garden 3?
@rio
From kiddies, to teeners, to 30’s to even grannies, Jerry Yan’s charisma defies ages.
This reminds me of some sets of jokes the Jerry Yan fans mentioned in one of those forums that hail him as one of the most famous Taiwanese actor…
It’s something like this..
How do you know that Jerry Yan is famous enough?
When daughters ask their parents for money to buy tickets to his concerts.
How do you know that Jerry Yan is REALLY famous?
When a guy’s girlfriend asks money from her boyfriend to buy tickets to watch his concerts.
How do you know that Jerry Yan is REALLY REALLY famous?
When boyfriend asks money from his girlfriend to watch Jerry Yan concerts.
He’s just that good even straight guys would do stuff to see him. OR.. It turned out, Jerry Yan’s so good that he can turn straight guys into gays. Hehe..

Why is it there is no meteor garden 3? do you guys know?=(
September 28th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
According to speculations, it might be because of the following reasons:
- Jerry Yan and Barbie Hsu not going along well
- the sudden popularity of F4 making them uber-busy and all
- the failure of Meteor Garden 2 to live up to the success of Meteor Garden 1
But for me none of those reasons is valid enough to not come up with Meteor Garden 3!
October 8th, 2007 at 8:00 am
I sure hope they make meteor garden 3!

October 22nd, 2007 at 9:43 pm
@daomisyel
Why not film a more mature Meteor Garden 3, then? MG2 was somewhat mature, wasn’t it?
Apparently, I can’t get enough of Meteor Garden. LOL!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
i agree with you 100%, a more mature MG3 is a good idea. it would be nice to know how the guys “grew up”. hey, we can dream, can’t we?
October 25th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

hi, guys. would you know where one could get a copy of MG 1 & 2 where the audio is in Filipino? i caught the show on channel 7 today. the “kilig” and heartbreak meter just shoots way up when it’s in Tagalog.
December 28th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
MG is a classic! Years ago when all the hoopla was at its peak, people thought it was just another flash-in-the-pan type of thing. But after 4 reruns over various networks (and I heard that it still rates), it just goes to show that it really is one heck of a great show!
Dao Ming Si will always be loved by me (and a million other people) and that’s that.
Ciao!
