Contradicting my work from home mantra, I was able to convince myself to go to Sutherland Global Services yesterday. Why? Just to visit. NOT!
The difficulties and bloodiness of the application procedures which I have heard straight from my dude’s brother and my sis-in-law who’s an ex-CyberCity-call-center agent fell on deaf ears and I still tried my luck and what I have learned from the Call Center Academy to win a technical support representative position.
So are you here to know how you can prepare yourself before walking in to apply? Or would you just want to know if I got in? Whatever! Here’s what I suggest you do if you are planning to brave the application procedures:
Prepare Your Resume and Credentials
A resume’ will do actually since that’s all I brought. No NBI clearance, TIN or SSS e-form. But you better take note of your TIN and SSS numbers since you will be asked to fill out an application form that requires those information. And yeah, don’t forget your 2×2 picture.
Dress in Your Most Comfy Casual Clothes
Although the usual advice is to be in corporate attire, don’t bother. You’ll see dozens upon dozens of applicants wearing sandals, jeans, rubber shoes and they don’t get hired. Hehe.
Seriously, you don’t really have to wear pumps if you don’t want to, flat closed shoes will do or even sandals actually. Guys can wear rubber shoes, too. No need for too stiff clothing. Even my CCA trainor told me that it’s not the norm anymore to wear uber-corporate stuff. But if you still believe that the clothes will help you boost your confidence, then do your thing.
Eat a Hearty Breakfast
But not so hearty that your excretory system might bug you when you need it the least. You need to eat breakfast so that you won’t feel the dizzying pangs of hunger during the online exams. Oh, this is, of course, if you will go there in the morning. I went there at 9 am.
Exam Preparation
Would you like an exam leakage? I can tell you the test questions if you ask for them now while their still freshly recorded in my really short-term memory. Just kidding. I won’t tell you those of course golf course. It would be very unfair. I had a hard time thinking about the answers on what FTP stands for. So I won’t be telling you that you need to know what the fastest speed that a cable Internet connection can have or that you need to know how to compute for acceleration and fractions. I won’t also tell you that you need to learn your prepositions and the adjective, verb, and noun form of a verb. NEVER! Ano ka sineswerte?!
Interview Preparation
Of course, the usual power of being articulate never wears during interviews, especially if you want a call center job. Try to practice being interviewed by a person who’s fluent in English. It’s one of the best ways to know if you’ll fare well. Don’t overprepare with scripts since you’ll sound robotic. I’m not an expert but this is what I’ve learned from CCA.
To-Brings
Books, snacks, mouthwash, toothbrush, PSP, your laptop or anything that will your boredom. It would be much better if you can start a conversation with other applicants so you can get rid of the post-exam jitters and even learn some more info about the job like the salary, working conditions, benefits or even gossips! Hehe. Yep, that’s how exactly I got rid of my boredom while waiting for almost 12 hours mostly spent waiting for interviewers. Got there at 9 am and went home at almost 10pm.
Many of the applicants were even re-scheduled today for their second or language assessment interviews. First is you’ll get an essay test together with the application form. Next is the initial interview, which is more of a getting-to-know-you stage really. Third is the online or written exam, which will depend if the online test system won’t be down when it’s your turn. If so, you will be just given a written exam. Third is the language assessment, which might take hours upon hours of waiting for the interviewer. We were scheduled to have the interview at 4pm but we actually got it at 8pm.
So don’t tell me that I haven’t warned you about these delays, ok?
Oh, one more thing, take the befriend-your-co-applicants advice a lot more seriously if you don’t have wheels because that’s how exactly two of the other applicants that I’ve met got themselves a ride home. Although, I don’t recommend that as something safe that you should do. Anyways, there
Goody good luck!
March 17th, 2007 at 8:20 am
just let me know if you got in, ok?
March 17th, 2007 at 8:41 am
An,
Why? Will you go to Sutherland to apply too?
March 17th, 2007 at 8:25 pm
I know a lot of people working in Sutherland hehe
Most call centers are really selective nowadays. I have no idea why, it’s just clear that they give high salaries. I’ve been in the industry for around 3 years and it’s fun, it really is. Growth is very fast in this industry.
Interview Tip: Just be confident on what you say. Never show the interviewer that you somewhat don’t know what you’re talking about. If you don’t know the answer, be honest. Don’t be a know-it-all and never pretend you really know what he’s asking, it’ll be obvious that you know nothing.
I’ve done lots of final interviews before and it’s better to get a person who can be trained rather than those who SEEMS to know everything but in the end reveals that he know nothing.
Just my cents

You work for Sutherland Clarkfield Pampanga or Sutherland Manila?

hello!i really want to work in your company, I applied last month..I passed the exam and the initial interview. I was wondering why i failed the language assesment test. I’m quite confident that i have the right grammar.I asked my friend who is working in Sutherland,Clark and he tod me maybe its because of my diction and my pronounciation. Well, I know i don’t have the visayan accent nor the ilocano diction..but I remember i read that language test in straight English ( you know what I mean?)I dont have the american accent!!! Can’t you give chances for us? I mean can we apply again? Now, I am training myself to speak in English with American Accent!!!

Hello everyone, I am a TSR Tier 1 for Mcafee of Sutherland Makati. I heard about this Davao Sutherland since I started my training here in Makati. As far as I know, Davao is already hiring TSR, CSR and other positions. Initial opening will be this September or November, the hiring i believe is near the Victoria Plaza, Sutherland has a building there. I am also hoping that I can go back to Davao, it would really be good to be home.
See yah there!!!
September 11th, 2007 at 4:16 am
Just curious as to what Sutherland is paying? I would like to know what it breaks down to in U.S currency.
September 11th, 2007 at 7:38 am
@Linda
According to the current exchange rates ($1 = Php46), if the usual salary for new agents is Php15,000, that would be about $326 per month.

Thanks Ms. Patricia… We made it on the floor. She’s one of the best trainers in SGS.
October 27th, 2007 at 8:30 am
I heard about the application process in Sutherland and I was actually impressed to learn that it took them just a whole day to process each applicant (though it would progress until late in the evening). When I applied at Convergys’ first job fair in Pampanga, I had to go back three times. I think waiting can always be productive anyway. Boredom is a state of mind. It’s sad though, that during these application processes, seldom would you see applicants bringing books or pieces of literature to evade idleness… and many still wonder why they don’t get into call centers like Sutherland.
October 29th, 2007 at 5:28 am
Way to go… I am in sutherland almost from the start, not true that there is a big difference between the 2 sites or shall I say 3 sites. HR selects people base on the program requirements. So give it your all you got nothing to loose… and if you dont succeed try again…
November 2nd, 2007 at 6:14 am

November 14th, 2007 at 4:15 am
ei guys, sutherland is about to hire a senior mgr for davao. the person is a senior mgr here in manila for another big company but comes from davao. dat person wil be der in davao next month.
November 16th, 2007 at 9:59 am
Diba??
November 18th, 2007 at 1:41 am
i applied as trainer for sutherland — davao, pero ang sabi nung hr gusto nya daw na dun ako s camarines sur. pero ayaw ko dun. gusto ko sa davao. sabi ng hr na keep my phone open n lang daw anytime. di na ako aasa pa.
November 18th, 2007 at 8:55 am
ano ano po ba yung, mga accounts sa sutherland makati???????
November 24th, 2007 at 10:36 am
guys, medyo jologs dyan sa sutherland. pero kung yan lang ang malaking call center dyan sa davao as of dis time, pag-tiisan niyo na lang muna. kunin niyong matuto ng madami, makakuha ng experience at pagkuhaan niyong mapromote habang andyan kayo.
Pag dumating na ang mga big time na mga call centers sa davao in 2 to 3 years time, sobrang lamang niyo na, magresign, then lumipat.
November 24th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
November 24th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
mga bai!!! sutherland is undergoing negotiations with the owners of …..guess what???……Pryce Tower!!!! di ko pa alam kung may final na, pero for the past several weeks they were negotiating with Pryce for the offices of Sutherland in Davao!!!
November 26th, 2007 at 2:18 am
mga friends! panget b tlga sa sutherland? magkano ba basic salary sa sutherland?
November 27th, 2007 at 3:49 am
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:53 am
Fellow Davaoeños:
Since the call center and BPO industry is about to take off in Davao, there are many mistakes that call center companies in Manila made that should never be committed in Davao especially in people management.
Many of the management practices (performance management systems, frequent coaching, frequent feedback, focus group discussions, etc) brought to Manila by Americans were adopted in Manila, but there was one thing that the Americans didn’t give careful thought of: Will their management practices be suitable to Filipino culture?
The answer is a big NO!
Why? Yes, these management practices worked really well in American culture and setting where Americans can easily communicate with each other openly, frankly and easily with little risk of resentment to candid feedback.
But in a Filipino culture, these management practices are viewed by Filipinos as:
-Excessive supervision

hiring p b ang sutherland s clark? ano2 ung mga open? ty…..
December 7th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
suth doesn’t seem to have an online application thingy going on. i hope they do have one. ive been working here in ps cebu for almost two years and i have plans to go back to davao. anybody here who can share the company benefits suth has?
the only thing that keeps me here in cebu is the account and the company benefits. i love our travel account. although its exhausting and client specifics are quite strict, its still really challenging. and the medical insurance they provide is one of the best in the industry.
December 8th, 2007 at 2:41 am
im a dsl tech currently working in sutherland for almost a year now. Dont waste your time here, employee appraisal is not so good… their agents are being taken for granted, employee convenience is very much at the bottom of the sutherland priorities…security is very strict as in they wont even let you pass through the front doors during the day time..just because the carpet might get ruined and applicants/guests/visitors might get turned off… the food sucks and is very expensive 45php for a full meal w/out drinks…no free iced tea, coffee, choco just plain old hot and cold water. Employee compensation is very bad…too many salary disputes as the payroll system is not very efficient… expect favoritism rather than performance in getting promoted. You can’t park your car in front coz only the managers are allowed to do so and the management and restaurant owners always get the best parking spaces…
just my 2 cents from a very disgruntled employee
December 8th, 2007 at 2:43 am
btw its sutherland clark Im talking about… thanks
December 10th, 2007 at 3:58 am
Comparing Sutherland to what you guys call “high class” call centers…
I’m not from Sutherland but it might help you guys to know that perfect call centers will never exist. My sister is from Sutherland and I’m from Convergys. Yes, Convergys does offer free coffee (and things to that effect) but when we were training, we were under a 30,000php bond. As I’ve found out, Sutherland doesn’t have a bond.
Looking at the business side of things, it is not cheap to train people. Let me give you a breakdown of how much a company will shell out when training one person:
A rough estimate of 2,000php during language training (electricity, water, the trainer’s salary, paper, etc…)
A rough estimate of 2,000php during product training
A rough estimate of 5,000php when training for product (since you will get paid for it already)
A rough estimate of 20,000php for your headset and your slot on the production floor (PC and avaya - which only 3 people can use in a 24 hour shift)
A couple more hundred for enrollment in medical insurance.
A couple more thousand for salary until you reach your 2nd month taking calls.
Remember that agents don’t start reeking in revenue for the company until their 2nd month on the floor taking calls. So, if an agent resigned before his/her second month, that’s a rough estimate of 30 thousand down the drain for whatever call center. That’s why many centers have bonds.
People who have never been to any other call center will always talk… will always compare. But, people who have had their share of job hopping will know what call center to target. It will never be the perfect one (because it never exists) but it will be the company that would have a lot to offer in terms of growth and promotion).
A lot of young Filipinos would whine about how call centers (like Sutherland) treat them without realizing that they themselves aren’t even the best agents the industry has ever seen (communication skills are down to average and customer service skills aren’t impressive at all).
It’s sad that a lot of people who leave negative comments here are actually working in Sutherland. Even dogs don’t bite the hand that feeds them.
If you’re not satisfied or happy with the company that you’re with, then leave… Or maybe deep down, you know for a fact that you need them more than they need you.
December 11th, 2007 at 3:31 am
shashida_r:
They don’t allow employees to pass through the front doors (only during the day) since it will create traffic and not because they don’t want to turn the applicants off. And so what if that was their primary reason? Basically, if the company grows, then the employee benefits would be better. That’s the reason why People Support has better medical insurance. This actually depends on the number of employees.
I bet that you haven’t been in any other call center but Sutherland or Cyber City. Why don’t you try the top centers in Makati and see if you’ll find one that has a pantry serving good food. The only edge the Makati call centers would have is the availability of fast food opened 24/7.
About the strictness of security… I wouldn’t mind that rather than worrying that one sorry-ass agent/outsider would one day snap and shoot people on the production floor (which actually happend in Sykes and Ambergris — that’s why it’s now called TELUS). And Call Centers are actually terrorist prone… I wouldn’t even want to get into the details of why they are since that would require me to discuss why terrorists exists in the first place. All I’m saying is that this is the reason why security is very strict for a lot of centers.
Rules and Regulations weren’t implemented to make everybody’s lives miserable. Before you whine and complain, put yourself in the shoes of those who have to come up with them, study the business structure of a call center and you might find yourself shocked with the dicisions that you would have to make yourself.

January 4th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Compare to other jobs, call center tech or rep isnt bad, i say its much easier to sit and talk than sweat yourself to death under the hardwork in some Factory doing the same thing all day.. its even much safer to work inside call center building than inside the facilty surrounded by hazardous chemicals, polluted environment, heavy machineries or equipment that are most likely dangerous when improperly handled.
about salaries, well i say again that call center compensate a lot more higher than most of the regular jobs out there.
January 5th, 2008 at 12:57 am
to all recruiters…if i were you, wag kayo maghire ng masyadong madaming mga agents na may mga experience na! maghire kayo mostly yung mga wala pang call center experience, galing sa mga regular day jobs, fresh grads, etc.
bakit:
May mga experience na sa call centers: madalas mag absent at kung ano ano mga rason, madalas late, reklamador, mahirap i-motivate, ang dami chechebureche.
habang maaga pa, ayusin niyo ang simula niyo.
January 9th, 2008 at 3:02 am
Good day! I already pass the exams and the initial interview and language assesment test..and waiting for the final interview and the schedule for training
tuloy tuloy na po ba yun pag nakapasa na? at pag sinabing wait for final intereview..Or there will still be a chance to fail…
please I need an answer
thanks
January 10th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
i just wanna ask if I can apply online as customer representative in sutherland clark?thank you
January 11th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
let me just suggest to everyone who aspire to become an agent to be fully aware of their english communication skills. if you think your are more than the average, then there’s no need to read further.
i suggest that before applying for the position, make sure you are totally prepared. the guy who posted the first long messages has all the tips you need to know..please pay attention to that.
if you are living near angeles city, there is an institution that train people to become good at call center jobs. Call Center Academy is one (in fact i just enrolled myself lately), while in makati there is ExcelAsia. basiccally these institution will teach you all about being a representative or an agent, develope your english, and oh yeah i think they’ll be teaching something about the amercian culture or the australian culture if ever you’ll be receiving calls from outside the country.
one last suggestion for the applicant, make sure you market yourself very well, make the HR manager know that you’re more than qaulified for the job. of course do this with confidence and passion to make the HR manager feel that you’re sincere.
thats all i can say for now.. till next time..

I used to work at Sutherland Clark, I was very happy indeed when our NHO day came, I was a Customer Representative way back then, an account being Isolated in a so called “aquarium” I expect alot from sutherland, good compensation, and the way they take care of their employees’ interest, but that expectation led into a BIG FRUSTRATION, really! Consecutive payroll disputes, SSS contributions disputes, and all that! So those who’re PLANNING TO GET YOUR FEET TO APPLY AT SUTHERLAND CLARK!! BE AWARE.. YOU ARE ENTERING SUFFER-LAND

i’ve bee with SGS for quite sometime but i recently quit because of several PAYROLL DISPUTES and internal acct anomalies. True enough there are positive points but believe me the negative points are overwhelming. I was from SGS Makati, here are some ponts for you to think about before you apply in SGS:
– HR pips are rude — esp when you ask them about payroll dispute
– payroll disputes — OTs, Absences, Cash Advance that you’re not even aware of and never received
– when you file payroll dispute — it takes forever … you can actually compile your payroll dispute forms
– dirty politics — all call centers have this but worst in SGS
– mandatory OT — you will be advised 1 min before you log out … badtrip! sometimes you’re not getting paid pa!
We all work to earn money so if you’re planning to apply in SGS you better think twice ..
Just for the record, a had a good track record in SGS but i never felt rewarded at all .. instead i’m still trying to follow up on my payroll disputes way back last november 2007 .. i’m actually getting tired.. well, karma is always there … SGS is an Indian company anyway …

I am a concerned guy, most especially for those who have not tried working and want to work at Sutherland Davao.
I was employed at Sutherland Davao in Tibungco TESDA. Process of hiring is usual as all of the other call centers. I may not be speaking for the whole, but my personal experiences with them had shared in common with several agents’ personal experiences as well.
If you are luckily chosen to be hired then I don’t really think your lucky at all. Recruitment will just say ” your training will start next week, we’ll just inform you about the schedule’. By Monday, nobody had called or even sent SMS informing me about the schedule. You would have to be the one always reminding them to remind you. Their HR / Admin, I think is at complete disarray.
By the time you are on training, you would always be the one to catch up on them regarding papers/forms that need to be filled out (bank forms, Philhealth, PAGIBIG, TIN, etc. Is it not supposed to be that Admin/HR should be the one to provide you forms/papers while you guys are in class or huddled together by batch?
Third of all, the ever interesting SALARY. They give out the highest starting salary in Davao City. Well, that is what they say. But the truth is there will be a lot of salary discrepancies. They let you sign in and out on a piece of paper to keep records of your attendance but at the end of the month, salaries will be questionable. There was a guy who has always been absent but has received the same amount of salary with the punctual guys. Some guy has not been receiving his salary for two pay offs, and was asking if he was going to get a carry over of those on the third pay; Admin replied: “of course you will”. On the third pay day, whhhaaalllluhhh!!! All he got was an equivalent of one pay. “Highest entry level salary”, I guess not. I think the most scandalous company in terms of salary. Making things worst for the victim-sleep deprived employee, they don’t give pay stub in paper. One must go through their web based program to view it, and by the way they don’t give priority in teaching you on how to do it.
Once you hit production, you are going to be overloaded with information and work. They say they are lookin for Technical Support Representative. The catch - surprise! You are going to do both the work of technical support and customer service. It is going to be a lot of work, a lot of tools, a lot of time that will be eaten up by this job. Guys get into a company that has ‘employee satisfaction’ in the line of their priority.
Wake up. If you had heard of some stories and now just heard mine; please consider what you have all heard. Stories are not made without basis.
This company has a lot of issues.
1. Salary discrepancies
2. Admin/HR unprofessionalism
3. Promises of Free shuttle service to Tibungco but now you need pay it
4. No night shift differential when on training
5. Poor training classroom setting
6. Indian trainers that you can’t understand
7. Poor employee satisfaction
8. etc., that I do not know of as of today, because I quit and bailed out on them.
