In the field of law, men and women may not share an equal opportunity because most clients prefer male lawyers over female lawyers. The reason for discrimination varies, but this should not be the case.
Many female lawyers share the same level of intellect and guts as the males. But truth is, the competition is stiff when it comes to practice and career opportunities.
There are literary hundreds of thousands of lawyers out there, men and women, who are in the practice. Most of them prefer practicing on private firms due to better salaries and opportunities to work with big companies and names.
If the competition among male and female lawyers is stiff, what does it take to become successful in this tight field of law? Well, there are many womanly qualities that can make a difference to succeed as a female lawyer.
Lawyers have confidence and guts to begin with. It is important for a female lawyer to possess the same amount of confidence and guts as a male lawyer would have. Yes the competition is stiff after law school, but while you’re in the academe, don’t hesitate to show them what you’ve got.
Another important quality that a successful female lawyer should have is having the brains for it. Female lawyers who excelled in law school have better chances of succeeding in the real world as practicing attorneys. But having the brains should not only give her the confidence to fight over the case of a lifetime, but to help her gain edge and a continuous path to success as a great lawyer among hundreds of thousands in the practice.
A female lawyer should also set a good example to her peers and to her community. The pressure of being a lawyer surely extends outside of law school, outside of the family and outside of the firm. The community still has a say on what kind of lawyer you are. If you’re a lousy lawyer, surely your local community knows it. So don’t be just one of the guys; excel and succeed, and be proud of it.
Being a woman has many negative implications especially when you’re a lawyer. The discrimination is there and it’s hard not to avoid it. Being smart and proving you’re better that your male counterparts could be bad at times, but it always pays when you prove your worth and your limitless capabilities in courtrooms and in winning cases.
Never underestimate the prowess of a woman. Most of the time this is where discrimination begins- may it be in law school, in the firm, in the courtroom. If this happens, there’s no reason to ponder on it, just prove your worth and face the challenge.
High profile cases would normally have male lawyers in the courtroom, so does the high level of testosterone lurking within the attorney who wins the case. But surprisingly, nowadays, female lawyers are playing an important part in some high profile cases especially if the client is not as discriminating.
Female lawyers definitely have what it takes to practice their careers and they deserve the right to equality. There’s no other explanation as to why they exist in the practice, they just do. The main issue is that female lawyers are not taken as seriously as male lawyers; that will definitely change soon.
The law may have employed more male attorneys, but females are fighting and winning. The ideal is, when in the courtroom or in a hot case, male or female, a lawyer should prove his/her worth in the practice.
