Happy 2008 everyone!

Remember my 2007 biz goals? I’m happy to say that I managed to achieve 3 out of 5 of my goals – more blogging jobs, create more blog posts, and start a new Internet-based business.

I’m going to continue on attempting to complete the two goals I wasn’t able to accomplish – creating stylesheets and the $300/month blog income. This 2008, I’m also including bolder goals like the following:

• Stick to monthly retainer agreements
• Put up a formal website
• Have a paperless home office
• Learn web design
• Master one project management software
• Get a feel of working from anywhere.

The expenses and technical stuff involved in accomplishing this list of goals make me more nervous than my 2007 goals. But I will definitely do my best.

So what are your business goals this year?

After the third quarter, here I go again telling the whole world about my milestones. Hah! Milestones. Can you feel the positive vibe this time as opposed to the negativity from my previous update?

1. More blogging jobs.

I still have three blogging jobs but I’m still hopeful that I’ll bag another one before this year ends.

2. Earn at least $300 monthly from my own blogs.

I’m not so much of a fan buzzwords but I just have to keep on dealing with them every so often simply because they make me earn money as a web content writer. Using them properly can help my clients realize that I’m the right person for their Internet marketing requirements.

But there’s one buzzword that I’ll never despise – Web 2.0. Others say that it’s just one big hype. Others say it’s the lazy Internet entrepreneur’s bestfriend. But for me it means making the most out of the Internet technology.

After getting groggy while doing my research about latest Web 2.0 acquisitions and how many startup companies which were mostly home-based when they were still in their baby stages and bootstrapped their way to success, I’ve thought of my own Web 2.0 concepts.

Everyone has his or her dream profession or business. Filipinos are fond of daydreaming working for big companies like SGV, San Miguel Corporation, Call Centers, er… Really? But I know there are also many of us who get starry-eyed when someone asks them what business they’d want to get into.

I’m now having the time of my life doing my dream job. No one dictates what time I should start working and no one stops me from playing with my niece (the toddler wearing a Tina Turner wig) whenever I want to.

And, if everything falls into place and I keep myself motivated, my dream business will be almost within my reach. While working at home accomplishing virtual assistant tasks, I wish to have another business that won’t require me to be so hands-on for it to succeed and also some kind of venture that’s so different from what I’m doing right now to satiate my obsession for variety.

How lucky AND industrious you are if it does. But what if something came up and your current salary is suddenly not enough? There are two ways to get around this problem:

1. Be painfully frugal to make ends meet with your current job’s salary.

You get rid of your impulsive shopping trips and lunch outs. You now choose Vaseline over L’oreal; Nescafe over Starbucks; electric fan over AC unit; etc. You get the idea. AND/OR…

2. You look for another source of income.

You either start asking your family and friends if they know of any part-time job that you can juggle with your current 9-to-5, check online job listings or Google part-time jobs Pampanga, Manila or anywhere you are.

Doing either of the two or both of those options, which is more advisable, may be easy for some but definitely difficult for many – like me. It can be very stressful and time-consuming.

Channelling one’s energy and effort to one source of income is actually winning more and more nods everyday. Those who advocate focusing on just one business depends on the fact that the more you don’t have a choice, the more vigor you put in running that business or job and the more chances of succeeding in it. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

However, if you are a professional multi-tasker or if you are simply getting bored of your current job, spreading your time and effort on various projects can actually become more rewarding. Aside from getting yourself more pockets to get money from, you also discover more of yourself when it comes to your limitations and inclinations. But the discovery part should not be your main goal if you really want to work on something else because you want more profit.

So, if you have been thinking that you can now accommodate other home based sources of income, what are your options? It depends on a variety of factors:

• How much free time can you dedicate for this new gig?
• Would you like another job that is totally not related to your current gig for you to explore or hone your other creative skills?
• Would you want to work on something that’s totally different from your business or job right now or are you only looking for more clients?
• Will you be investing money? How much can you afford to invest?

So how do you start looking for new gigs? It’s often the same way you found your current gig. Research, apply, deliver and advertise.

Working from home in the Philippines, especially doing online jobs, is one fun feat because aside from the possibility of getting paid in dollars, which is equivalent to approx. Php48 as of this time being, technology makes many tasks easier to accomplish.

So after three months, I’m glad to take note of which goals I’ve accomplished so far:

The boom of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines has made many new graduates resort to working as a customer service representative or a call center agent when they tire of looking for jobs in line with their degrees.

Why is BPO a very viable business here in the Philippines?

Aside from our innate hospitality that can be heard even through our voice (really?!), Filipinos’ accent is very easy to polish to mimic that of a native English speaker. We also don’t require that much of compensation compared to Americans because of the status of the Philippine peso against the dollar.

According to a call center trainor, another reason why the Philippines is getting more nods from foreign companies looking for customer service support is that Filipinos are more organized.

So there you go why Sykes, People Support, Sutherland Global Services, Convergys, ClientLogic and many other call center companies thrive.
