Tell Me What Tuesday: What Laptop Brand Do You Use?
A brand new laptop is one of my top must-have gadgets when I started dreaming designing my home office. However, the year’s almost over and I haven’t even decided yet what brand with what specs to get!
When typhoons Lando and Mina went Fujiwara’ing, can’t help but worry a great deal about my work. I can sense that series of brownouts everyday or so are about to happen. And guess what? I haven’t heeded Gab’s suggestion yet about getting an inexpensive generator. So I believe I could at least get myself an extra and more useful tool to extend my online presence and probably help me get a feel of my new goal – mobile working.
Although I’m dying to, I won’t be able to buy it asap because of some financial trouble that I’m praying hard to get over and done with within this week. But by hook or by crook, I’m sure I’ll be able to gift myself with one on my birthday. Haha!
So dear walk-in visitors, email and RSS feed subscribers and passersby from search engines, would you mind telling me about your laptop brands and their specs? What would you recommend for a writer/virtual assistant like me?

Try the Eee PC by Asus. It’s cheap and nice. Specs can be found via google. If you don’t do intensive work like graphics or programming, this works fine (though you can do those two using browser based sites as well these days, which is fine using the Eee)
If you want a more conventional one, try twinhead or msi s262 (i think). they’re also cheap and better than my 1 year old lappie since upgrades are now really cheap.

Coincidentally, I just bought mine a few months ago here in Korea. It’s a Clevo M720S, with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz processor, 2Gb of memory, 120Gb hard drive, 3G/WLAN/Bluetooth modules, 56kpbs internal modem, all in a nice and small white compact shell w/ a 12″ screen. The price? $700. Fortunately for me, it’s a Taiwanese brand, and their products are of good quality nowadays, with easy-to-find, easy-to-replace parts.
The Asus Eee is nice (see, another Taiwanese brand
, and as Glenn said, if you’re not heavy on the graphics side, it’s the best option for you right now. I believe they’re selling it at around $399 these days, but if you wait a little longer, you should be able to buy one for less.
There are also these $200 Taiwanese-branded laptops sold online, you might want to take a look at those too. Just don’t expect the compact types: this tribe lugs around w/ monitor sizes of at least 15″, which, as I’ve already experienced several times, that 5-lb luggage will feel like a 5-kg beast pretty fast, especially with all the walking, waiting and running at the airport come boarding time.

@Glenn and Gabs
Just what I’ve thought – no one will ever dare recommend a MacBook Pro. LOL.
I’ll do some research about all your suggestions.
Thanks guys!

There are a couple of sample laptops that real people are using in PhilippineLaptops.com. I interviewed a bunch of them. Personally, I’m using a very light laptop – compaq B1900 series. Luving it. It’s the envy of my friends and acquaintances.

Mine is a Compaq Presario something something (hehe) and I got it for $600 from Circuit City in VA, USA. Thank God we know someone who works there so I was able to get discounts. Can’t give you the precise specs coz my bro, who is an IT geek, picked it our for me based on my needs (basta all i know is DVD writter cya and wifi ready which is what I really, really need for work). If you have a relative in the US, I suggest to ask them to buy you one coz laptops there are so cheap. Actually, gadgets there are so cheap (a MAC notebook costs $1000 only). Almost 200% patong pagdating nila sa Pilipinas so imagine how much savings I got. Bad thing lang sa latest models ng laptops is their OS is Vista. You have to hate Vista. It doesn’t support all programs you enjoy with XP coz it is fairly new so limited ka. I can’t even play Sims on my laptop. Hopefully early next year it will be able to support more programs. *crossesfingers*

I’m on a desktop machine (the bigger the monitor, the better), but I went over and looked at my daughter’s new machine. She’s using an HP with Windows Vista. We got it just last month for just under $600.

@Jozzua
Thanks for the suggested resource. I’ve finally found one for me!
@Arvee
I’m not a fan of Windows Vista either but most of the laptops are equipped with that OS, including the one that I got just today.
@Laura
THE desktop will always be my first love. But I gotta go out a little bit sometimes. HP’s getting so many votes so.. *Wink* *Wink*

[...] A few days after writing a post about my need for a laptop, and thinking about it a lot of times (about four times), and checking which laptops rock for a non-graphics-designer like me, I’d gladly let the sales clerk from Accent Micro swipe my BPI credit card and grabbed a Black MacBook Pro with Leopard!
