Tell Me What Tuesday: How Did You Start as a Home Based Worker or a Freelancer?
Warning: mildly ranty blog post ahead
Since childhood, writing is what I’m most passionate about. However, like how many people who dislike writing or who are just not discerning enough, my father thought it’s a profession that will just make me starve. So, like the innumerable obedient Filipina daughters of commanding parents, I tried my best to make my father happy by pursuing the course he wanted me to take – BS Biology, a pre-med course.
Do I hate my father for talking me into not pursuing a writing career? Of course not, not anymore, at least. It was still my decision to follow his advice, right?
I never became a doctor but I landed a laboratory job. This technical job still failed to make me completely forget about my passion for the written word. As I’d still read books about writing and even join online forums for writers.
And one fateful day, while reading some posts on a Filipino writers’ forum, I came across this announcement from a person looking for article writers. I posted my response which eventually sealed my longest-running episode of web content writing project.
Then, a few months after agreeing blindly when I was asked if I can gather a team of writers to produce hundreds of articles per month, I gave my resignation letter to my boss and started working from home. And I never looked back since then.
How about you? What convinced you to prefer working from home? Or if you are still keeping your 9-to-5, what made you fall in love with freelancing? Or if you are still in the planning stage of your home based business, when are you going to launch it? What compelled you to just do it?

I have been a WAHM for almost 3 years now. I started out as a transcriptionist then I became a content writer. Recently discovered how I put my years of corporate, non-corporate and government experience into good use. The key is being a succesful feelancer is in having the right set of skills for the right kind of clients. Having a good grasp of Internet technology is not enough. Versatility also helps.

@Maying
Thanks for sharing your beginnings. Being able to match your skills with clients’ requirements and finding the right clients do help a lot in making freelancing a good souce of income.

I got started as a freelancer — a freelance writer, that is. I’ve now branched out into blogging, which seems to suit me well. I’ve been a WAHM for five years now (I can’t believe it’s been that long!)

[...] I’ve not always been a good follower of my heart, I’ve started as a follower of other’s plans for me. But fate knew better and from then on I followed what I enjoy doing more than what I’ve mastered to do. [...]
