Home Based Call Center Business in the Philippines
The boom of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines has made many new graduates resort to working as a customer service representative or a call center agent when they tire of looking for jobs in line with their degrees.
Why is BPO a very viable business here in the Philippines?
Aside from our innate hospitality that can be heard even through our voice (really?!), Filipinos’ accent is very easy to polish to mimic that of a native English speaker. We also don’t require that much of compensation compared to Americans because of the status of the Philippine peso against the dollar.
According to a call center trainor, another reason why the Philippines is getting more nods from foreign companies looking for customer service support is that Filipinos are more organized.
So there you go why Sykes, People Support, Sutherland Global Services, Convergys, ClientLogic and many other call center companies thrive.
But What if You Don’t Want or Got Tired of Working for a Company and Would Rather Put Up Your Own Home Based Call Center Business?
I have read ads that are offering home-based call center service. But I don’t know if that’s a good move from the advertiser but since the advertiser posted it on the job section when its objective is to look for clients.
Most probably, there are already existing home based call center businesses here in the Philippines but they would not rather give any emphasis to their workplace for the fear of being perceived as “a too-small-can’t-get-a-commercial-office a business for clients to trust.”
Or maybe some prefer themselves to be called virtual agents since taking calls is not their only task such as one of my previous employers.
But the point is establishing a home-based customer support business can be done.
So how do you put up a home based call center business?
I know an ex-co-worker who is in the process of preparing a business plan for her home-based call center biz. And she told me she is partnering with an experienced call center agent.
I haven’t asked her yet how she will get clients but she told me that her partner has “contacts” so I guess it won’t be too hard for her to look for clients.
Also, if one would not want to concentrate on taking inbound or doing outbound calls (home-based telemarketing) no one’s stopping you on offering other services such as transcription, website designing, bookkeeping, etc. However, if you will be offering a combination of these services then you might as well call your business as home-based virtual assistance, right?
But if you would like to start a work-from-home business as a call center agent but you don’t have any experience, better work for a company first. Or another option is to take some call center training first, then apply, if you don’t have enough confidence just yet.
Also, if you don’t want to go solo looking for your own clients, try Best Job Philippines or Craigslist first and look for companies, usually startup businesses operating in home offices, who are hiring home-based call center agents or telemarketers. If you are good in bidding, GetaFreelancer.com and Scriptlance.com can be good sources of these home-based jobs, too. But again, just be very careful and do your homework before agreeing to work for just any company to avoid scammers.

I have to say, English accents may be easy to mimic, but when I call a foreign call centre, 9 times out of 10 they have no clue what I am saying. And that is with a middle class English accent. What use is a good English accent to them if they don’t understand what is being said? Comprehension is key here.
