How to Convince Your Boss to Allow You to Work from Home
I know, many would prefer to never bring their work home. But I also do know that there is still a number of us who are dreaming to be allowed to have their jobs done at home. Such is proven by the increasing number of teleworking employees discovered by the International Telework Association — from 41.3 million to a projected 51 million by 2008.
Telecommute jobs are fast gaining in number, my post regarding working from home in the Philippines has reached quite a few who will surely not mind to be considered for these opportunities. But making your employer consider such option for you might pose more challenge. These are the tips suggested by Jane Anderson, director of Midwest Institute of Telecommuting:
1. Learn for yourself first if your job can be accomplished at home.
2. See if your boss has a good impression of you as a good candidate for telecommuting.
3. A few months of planning before the formal request for a work at home schedule is important. Regular submission of accomplishment reports can help.
4. Have the proposal in black and white. Provide monitoring methods for your tasks. Highlight the benefits the employer can gain from your telecommuting, which might include:
- decrease of operational expenses
- improved employee productivity
- less absenteeism
As for my own tactics, I had to make sure that my skills are one of the hottest. Come on, not a lot of my colleagues know a thing about blogging or link building. I asked for teleworking arrangements since I’m definitely sure that I can do these tasks without having to go to the office.
However, it is imperative that you have a good track record in terms of reliability with your delivery of output before you even think about that one on one talk about your telecommuting proposition with your boss.
If your boss says no during your first attempt, don’t fret. There’s always next time and whole lot of opportunity for you to prove that you are better off as a home based employee.
