Home Based Job No. 5: General Transcriptionist (Non-Medical)
The boom of the medical transcription industry has given hope to a lot of health sciences graduate who had a hard time getting non-internship jobs. However, how about those who can’t tell the difference between a diagnosis and a prognosis? I mean those who don’t have any medical background but would still like to do transcribing.
A general transcriptionist is simply someone that can transcribe any files except medical audio files.
Usually, those who would need the services of a non-medical transcriptionist are podcasters. Many podcasters are internet-savvy people trying to convey information through audio recording. For their audio files to become written words, transcriptionists are indispensable. Other netpreneurs who produce teleclasses also record their conversations and get them transcribed by transcriptionists.
How viable is being a transcriptionist as a home-based job? As long as you have good typing speed, say 40-60 wpm, can hear well, can understand various accents, and are comfortable with the use of a software that will facilitate your transcription, it can be a very good source of income. And please don’t discount the skill of looking for clients as many work from home gigs require to succeed.
Here is one job lead that might help you find general transcription jobs:
In need of part-time transcribers for podcasts.
Requirements:
1) Must have a computer at home, internet access preferable.
2) Can work with minimum supervision and can work within deadlines.
3) College students are welcome to apply.
4) Past transcription experience not required.
We pay around 350-600 PHP per podcast transcribed, based on the length of the podcast.
Of course, I prefer Filipino applicants so we can work more easily with each other.
Please send me a message in email through transcriber@skillze.com if you wish to apply.

Im very much interested in applying for this type of job which would allow me more flexibility and, at the same time, would enable me to pursue other activities.
My previous employments involed selling which had put too much pressure on me. And with this one, the only pressure, I guess, would involve time, which I believe, I can handle pretty well.
My recent work experience was with a call center company handling US customers. My typing speed is 90-95 wpm.
Right now, I dont have a DSL connection, but I’m willing to set-up one in case I will have the opportunity to work here.
