It’s not writing about horror stories or anything spooky. Wikipedia defines ghostwriting as writing under someone else’s name, with  their consent. Ghostwriters often work for celebrities who are not so skilled in writing to write autobiographies.

Ghostwriting is related to web content writing as many webmasters or publishers often hire ghostwriters to write their web content in the form of private label rights articles or PLR. PLR articles are sold in bundles and marketed with the help of forums, websites or web pages, etc.

Ghostwriting is not only confined to articles or autobiographies. Internet marketing folks also recognize the service of ghostwriters in producing electronic version of books or e-books.

I DON’T get the idea behind “starting a home business as a writer” being on the ‘Dumb list’ for work-at-home crowd.

It’s my bread and butter. What’s so dumb about it? Probably not a lot of people are gifted with the skill set of writing. But for those who do have the flair for it, by all means, do consider writing as a homebased job. There’s money in written words!

There are various kinds of writing jobs. The most popular ones are web content writing, copywriting, ghostwriting, and problogging. I’ll be discussing web content writing first as it’s what I do for a living.

Freelance sites such as elance and rentacoder are filled with service requests for web content writing. Why? It’s the recent realization of marketing folks that “content is king”. Good content fuels websites. A business website gain “profitable traffic” because of its content, which is produced by web content writers.

Who wouldn’t mind working in his pyjamas? Who would trade his 9 to 5 with the opportunity to earn without having to not see your kids anytime you want to? I see a lot of raised hands.

The other perks of having the option to telecommute is being able to work anytime you think you’d be at your most productive. Though this is not always the case as there are companies who allow their employees to work at home and that check on them every now and then. Companies in the Philippines don’t seem to be ready to graze this pasture, yet. But if you find one, I will appreciate it if you will tell me a thing or two about it. In the Philippines, more and more are getting hooked with working from home, particularly moms. This is because it does not only make them more involved with their households but it also allows a Pinoy avoid the polluted streets and the traffic that brings one’s blood to a boil. Usually, they are homebased businesses that allow one to make use of his or her manual skills, e.g., crafts.

I explore a lot of free job listing sites such as Craigslist and Monster and I encounter job post descriptions like this:

Are you willing to pay registration fees for a homebased job?

That’s an obvious tell-tale that the job poster is NOT offering any legitimate job. If you fall for it you’re doomed. Sure, there are some legitimate jobs that require payment before getting started. However, if that job post is from a free classified ads, there’s a fat chance that the job poster is not up for something good.

Sure, there are those who are just so proud because they’re working for stable companies like San Miguel. But ever heard of layoffs? Here are four more reasons why we people of the Philippines better start our own work at home gigs:

1. More Personal Freedom

Aside from having more time for family and friends, one who’s setup a home-based business may have more time to indulge in his or her creative side by continuing to pursue hobbies that used to be neglected because of the office pressures. As opposed to the notion that working at home stunts one’s social growth, one can have more time to widen his or her social network as long as telecommuting schedule is well-executed.

Reports have it that each year, Americans spend about 348 hours commuting. Filipinos might even spend twice or thrice that much because of the chronic traffic.

2. Better Health

With a home business, it’s easy to forget about the time and never stretch a limb if you engross yourself fully to your job. But that’s defeating the purpose of telecommuting. If you’re just starting out your biz that’s normal. As you get the hang of your home-based gig you will have more time to spend to manage your health. Soon you will have more time for gym visits, jogging or sports that you have stopped doing ever since you stepped on the corporate ladder.

Just a few months ago I remember myself emailing my application for a medical transcriptionist job opening at Jobstreet.com. I thought of gaining some experience before sending my application to work at home medical transcription gigs.

After a few days after sending my application, I received a text message prompting me to go to the school that hires medical transcriptionists. When I reached the very office, which is at a new school in San Fernando, Pampanga, where the other application procedures are supposed to be accomplished, other applicants were already answering application forms.

The HR staff gave me one to answer while telling everyone to wait for the interview that will be conducted by the “employer” who’s on his way. Some of the curious applicants asked about a number of questions regarding the job. Here is the Q & A bout:

The brain drain in the Philippines has its pros and cons.

Pros: Brain drain helps the Philippine economy.

One of the effects of the Philippines “brain drain” is that the flow of inward remittances is maintained, about US$8 billion a year, an essential pillar of the Philippines economy and comparing to about US$2 billion a year for Bangladesh, another country with an economic dependence on inward remittances. In fact remittances “home” on a worldwide basis reached something between US$80 and US$150 billion in 1991—the remittance business is very big business indeed. The development of well-qualified professionals is in fact an exportable product of the Philippines, which contributes much more to the Philippines economy than say foreign-direct investment of (recently) less than US$1 billion year.
